Business Schools

(Post Graduate Diploma in Management)

PGDM expands to Post Graduate Diploma in Management, the main reason why postgraduate courses are named as PGDM is because when an Institute is an autonomous body (meaning it is not affiliated to any University) and conducts management courses then such Institutes cannot offer MBA degree. Even IIMs, XLRI's doesn't offer MBA degrees they only give PGP Diploma or PGDM since they are autonomous and independent bodies. On similar lines AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) is allowing approved colleges to run a PGDM course and the Business Schools offering this PGDM course need not be autonomous, the PGDM course will be autonomous given by the Institute & directly approved by AICTE.

Advantages of PGDM

When an Institute secures autonomy they design their own curriculum to be taught instead of following prescribed as in University syllabus. Normally, the syllabus change at University level happens once in either 3 or 5 years. Technically syllabus change affects university affiliating colleges, the books needs to be revised and the faculty needs to upgrade themselves and in the colleges, having autonomy, the curriculum can be updated regularly depending on the need in Industry without approval from any University. Hence one can say that PGDM courses are more Industry relevant, up to date as compared to MBA courses.

In case of MBA, the colleges are affiliated to a University and Universities are controlled by University Grants Commission (UGC) and the colleges may also get accredited by AICTE, and UGC recognized MBA programmes need not have AICTE approval.

When will a PGDM equals to MBA?

A PGDM completed certificate will become equivalent to a MBA degree, when the college offering the PGDM course will have further accreditation from AIU (The Association of Indian Universities), along with the existing affiliation to a University

What is an AIMA PGDM Verses AICTE PGDM?

AIMA PGDM or PGPM course is a certificate program; AIMA stands for All India Management Association an apex body which conducts MAT examination. AIMA also offers PGDM which is clearly mentioned as a course approved by AICTE and DEC - Distance Education Council. There is a lot of difference between AIMA PGDM & AICTE PGDM.

Why Get a PGDM?

The main reason to attend a B-School is to increase your salary potential and advance your career. Because graduates who hold a PGDM are eligible for jobs that would not be offered to those who hold only normal degrees, PGDM is almost a necessity in today’s business world.

In most cases, a PGDM is required for executive and senior management positions. There are some companies who will not even consider applicants unless they have a PGDM. People who hold a PGDM will find that there are many different types of employment opportunities that are available to them.

What Can You Do With a PGDM?

Many PGDM programs offer an education in general management along with a more specialized curriculum. Because this type of education is relevant to all industries and sectors, it will be valuable regardless of the career that is chosen after graduation.

Types of PGDM programs

When it comes to a PGDM, there are many different disciplines that can be pursued and combined. The options shown below are some of the most common PGDM Specializations;

Where Can You Get a PGDM?

Much like a law school or medical school education, the academic content of a business school education does not vary much between programs. However, experts will tell you that the value of a PGDM is often directly related to the prestige of the school which grants it.

Every year Business Schools receive rankings from various organizations and publications. These ranking are determined by a variety of factors and can be very useful when choosing a business school or a PGDM.

Business Schools

(Master of Business Administration)

The MBA is a postgraduate degree that is awarded to students who have mastered the study of business. The MBA degree is thought to be one of the most prestigious and sought after degrees in the world. A two year management degree expands to Master of Business Administration, only Universities can grant MBA degrees. It could be a recognized an Indian University or foreign university.

The MBA degree originated in the United States in the late 19th century when the country industrialized and companies sought scientific approaches to management. Students of MBA programs study the theory and application of business and management principles. This type of study equips students with knowledge that can be applied to a variety of real world business situations.

Business Schools

(Post Graduate Program in Management)

PGPM is Post Graduate Program in Management and is not a Degree. It is offered by many private Institutions (locally run educational institutions; appear to be like B-Schools). And PGPM is like a normal Certificate Course provided by the Institute itself, which can be of any duration as decided by that particular Institute. It is also not approved or affiliated by any Government Statutory Body & with no permission accorded to deliver the program.

But nowadays, PGPM is often clubbed with MBA of any UGC recognised University prescribed as OUT REACH program (Distance Mode), the final completed MBA degree is delivered as per the DEC – Distance Education Council norms. And the so called institutions conducting MBA+PGPM will be mentioned as authorised study centre in the Study Centres list of that respective UGC recognised University &  normally the program conducting institution will be outside the official jurisdiction of that University which accorded the permission to run MBA+PGPM.

Sometimes, the value of PGPM certificate is mainly depends on the Brand Name of the institution awarding that certificate, for example IIMs give PGP as they are Autonomous & Independent Bodies, instituted by Government of India, and this cannot be compared with institutions appear to be like B-Schools with their infrastructure & affiliated to a University offering OUT REACH programs.

Business Schools

(Executive MBA)

(Xavier Aptitude Test)

XAT 2015 will be conducted on Sunday 4th January 2015. XLRI conducts test on behalf of the XAMI. For more than 60 years XLRI is conducting test at all India level to select the most appropriate for management education. The test score is being used by more than 100 institutes for the admission.

The format of XAT would remain pen-paper based. This is to ensure that candidates of all backgrounds are at par, so that those who have pre-familiarity of operating computers, specially coming from privileged background or having worked in IT sector, do not get any advantage over others who do not have access to computers. The paper-pen mode also ensures that all candidates are tested on exactly the same set of questions, and not on different sets.

Entrance Exam

(Graduate Record Examination)

The GRE general test is meant to measure your overall academic ability and is the standard exam for admission to non-business schools. However, an increasing number of business schools are accepting scores from the GRE exam. Also, not all graduate schools or programs require the GRE. Some schools and programs also require various subject tests, so check with your choice of schools to make sure which exam(s) you need to take. The GRE general exam does NOT test you on any specific facts or pieces of knowledge that you may have learned in any one class.

For the quantitative and verbal reasoning assessments of the GRE revised General test, the scores range from 130 to 170 points. For the analytic writing section, scores range from 0.0 to 6.0, in half-point increments. There are two verbal and two math sections on the GRE revised General test. The first of both sections is not computer adaptive, but the difficulty of questions that you'll be given for the second section is dependent on how well you did on the first section. The essay section of the GRE is composed on the computer, but both writing tasks are graded by trained readers.

It all makes for a test-taker friendly experience, more confidence and the ability to use your scores for thousands of graduate and business schools worldwide.

(International English Language Testing System)

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) assesses the English language proficiency of people who want to study or work where English is used as the language of communication. IELTS tests are held in over 1,000 locations across the world with tests up to four times a month

Why choose IELTS?

IELTS tests all four language skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking. The IELTS Speaking test is a face-to-face interview with a certified Examiner. It is interactive and as close to a real-life situation as a test can get

Test format: IELTS test takers can choose between two versions of the test – Academic or General Training – depending on their academic or professional aims, or visa requirements. All candidates take the same Listening and Speaking components but different Reading and Writing components

Types of questions: Find out more about what to expect in the IELTS Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking tests. Understand the question and task types in each section of the test.

Academic or General Training: IELTS Academic measures the English language proficiency needed for an academic, higher education environment. IELTS General Training measures English language proficiency in a practical, everyday context. This version of the test is also often a visa requirement for those planning to migrate to English speaking countries including Australia, the UK, and New Zealand.

A reliable, secure test: The IELTS nine (9) band score system grades scores consistently. It is secure, benchmarked and understood worldwide. Test materials are designed carefully so that every version of the test is of a comparable level of difficulty

Special needs: Test Centres make every effort to cater for test takers with special needs. If you require a modified version of the test you must give the Test Centre three months notice. This notice period is necessary for the modified test version to be prepared. If your circumstances require special administrative arrangements to be made, e.g. extra time, you must give the Test Centre six weeks' notice

M Phil

(Master of Philosophy)

The M.Phil is a less advanced qualification than the Ph.D in which the student is expected to master a content area and can be completed in two years' full-time study. The M.Phil dissertation is normally shorter than the Ph.D thesis. It is often used as a training course in advanced research work, and can be a preliminary stage for the Ph.D where it is necessary to learn the fundamentals of research and acquire new techniques. The MPhil is also a legitimate higher degree qualification in its own right.

As with the Ph.D, it is not possible to spell out in bureaucratic detail what is required to obtain the M.Phil in your subject now. You need to read successful dissertations in order to discover the standards expected. Here, but only in very general terms, are some ways in which the M.Phil has been held to differ from the Ph.D.

A candidate for an M.Phil must undertake an investigation but, compared to the PhD, the work may be limited in scope and the degree of originality. Considerably more emphasis is put on original work in the Ph.D and the Ph.D thesis involves greater depth than an M.Phil dissertation. Greater synthesis and critical ability and also a more detailed investigation of any practical illustrations are expected from doctoral candidates.

The M.Phil can be limited to the replication of research already published. It is also acceptable for secondary sources to be used. This means that for an M.Phil it is legitimate to quote some authority quoting somebody else.

In addition, although a full summary of literature is required, it does not have to be an evaluative review as in the Ph.D. The difference here is in the breadth and depth of the review as well as in the amount of critical appreciation that is expected. In a high quality M.Phil, evidence is required of the ability to test ideas; understand appropriate techniques; make use of published work and source material; and show familiarity with different theories and empirical studies.

Each university will have its own regulations concerning the M.Phil degree and you must study carefully those which apply to you.

Ph D

(Doctor of Philosophy)

Masters degrees prepare a person for a range of pursuits through specialized study of a field. Research masters enhance a student's research skills, prepare them for a Ph.D. program, and may help qualify them to teach in elementary, secondary, and community education settings. Professional masters degrees teach students skills they will need as practitioners in their respective fields, and may lead to credentials necessary to practice in the field.

A Ph.D means Doctor of Philosophy and is the highest academic degree an individual can earn within a field of study. Individuals who complete a Ph.D. receive the title of 'doctor.' A doctoral degree requires extensive research often leading to the completion of a dissertation. Ph.D. recipients can progress toward careers as college professors, researchers or other professional positions related to their field.

Individuals wishing to pursue higher education degrees should consider their career goals and the objectives they hope to accomplish. They should research the career they intend to pursue and determine the level of education needed to acquire the position. Individuals should speak to academic and enrolment counsellors at the prospective institutions where they wish to study before making final decisions about their education. Some careers require only a bachelor's degree while others prefer graduate degrees in the form of a master's or doctoral degree.

A Ph.D. typically demonstrates a person's competence in research and qualifies them to become professors. It can also prepare them to play developing policy roles in the non-profit, public, and private sectors. Doctoral study offers a unique opportunity for an individual to conduct intensive and prolonged research on a very particular topic, which often leads to publication. Other reasons exist to get a Ph.D.—such as the desire to be called "Doctor," or the romantic notion of being a Ph.D. candidate at a prestigious institution—but these reasons pale in the light of the hard work and long years it takes to earn the distinction, if your professional goals do not require it.

Fellow is provided as a financial grant to those students who already took admission but want to move with some research work. There are some government organizations which also provides fellowship so that to make some new research in this country. Some of the good universities offer both scholarships well as fellowship as NMIMS, LPU etc. Lovely professional university is considered as good university in providing scholarship as well as they offer many different fellowship as it is international level university.

(Doctoral degree)

The most common doctorate is the Doctor of Philosophy and other research doctorates prepare students to initiate new projects that add to the collective knowledge base of the field. Candidates for and holders of Ph.D often seek careers as professors and researchers, but many also go on to varied roles in the non-profit, public, and private sectors

Typical program details

Students entering a Ph.D. program have already earned a bachelor's degree, and sometimes also a master’s degree (depending on the Ph.D. program). Because of the nature of specialization, Ph.D. programs tend to be smaller than masters programs.

Ph.D. candidates begin by taking courses and exams, go on to taking advanced seminars and designing dissertation research, and complete their requirements by researching, writing, and defending a dissertation. A dissertation is the doctoral-level thesis, the culmination of a Ph.D. candidate's research into a topic, and typically the major requirement of earning the doctorate. Unfortunately, failure to complete the dissertation is a major reason some doctoral candidates don't complete their studies, but may claim "ABD" (All But Dissertation) on their resumes.

Doctorates may take up to eight years to earn—depending on the program, whether the student has already completed a masters degree (or is coming straight from undergraduate), and how long the student takes to write the dissertation.

A certification program is a set of courses in a particular field that lead to certificate status or a license to practice. Whether you need the skills to improve your current work or need a license to start practicing in your field, certification proves to you and to potential employers that you have attained certain knowledge of and experience in your field. That field dictates both what certifications are possible to obtain and the means to do so. Therefore, prerequisites for certification can include any combination of the following: completing coursework, earning a degree, passing examinations, and/or successfully completing an internship or other experiential component. Sometimes certification is part of a degree program, while other times its independent.

Going to graduate school for any degree and in any field, you should be prepared for a different experience from your undergraduate years. When you enrol in a graduate degree program, it's best to be motivated by professional and academic goals, and in many fields, to have a few years of work experience under your belt

Continuing to work while you go to school part-time (or full-time) has advantages for your school, your employer, and you. The many advantages to you, such as the ability to continue earning an income while in school, must be weighed against disadvantages like having little time for personal pursuits, friends, and family.

More alternatives to traditional full-time graduate school attendance are available now than ever before, and if you are happy with your job, you may not have to choose between school and work. Part-time program formats include evening and weekend courses, online components, and more. Attending grad school part-time will just take a little more forethought and juggling than it ordinarily would, but the rewards are many, including financial.

In the past decade, distance education has become an increasingly popular way for colleges to provide access to their programs and for students to learn about topics and get degrees they might not otherwise be able to pursue. Instructors from colleges are using the potential of distance learning to teach students from all around the globe and allow them to work collaboratively on projects, degrees-focused content and educational enrichment.

Distance education or distance learning is a mode of delivering education and instruction, often on an individual basis, to students who are not physically present in a traditional setting such as a classroom. Distance learning provides "access to learning when the source of information and the learners are separated by time and distance, or both.

Distance education courses that require a physical on-site presence for any reason (including taking examinations) have been referred to as hybrid or blended courses of study. Massive open online courses (MOOCs), aimed at large-scale interactive participation and open access via the web or other network technologies, are a recent development in distance education.

So what exactly is distance learning?

Distance learning occurs when there is a separation between the instructor and the student, usually due to geographical or time concerns that prevent the student from attending an on-campus course. Often, electronic means are used to bridge this gap and distribute educational material though distance learning programs using printed and mailed materials have existed for well over a hundred years. These programs have usually been specially designed to help best meet the needs and requirements that arise when learning is taking place outside of a traditional classroom setting.

The majority of distance education today takes place using the Internet, now readily accessible for the vast majority of students whether in their own homes or at facilities such as local libraries. These electronic means are used to distribute the learning material, keep students in touch with teachers, and provide access to communication between students. Of course, distance learning can use other technological formats as well including television, DVDs, teleconferencing, and printable material, but the immediacy and functionality of Web learning has made it a first choice for many distance learners. Online programs often take advantage of a number of emerging technologies to make keeping in touch and effectively communicating ideas easier and more efficient than ever before and students may find themselves using interactive videos, e-mail, and discussion boards to complete their lessons.

Distance learning makes it much easier for some students to complete a degree or get additional job-training while balancing work and family commitments. Because the hours when class work can be completed are flexible, as most distance learning programs allow students to work at their own pace and on their own time, many students can complete their work during times when they are free, rather than scheduling their lives around a set classroom time. With more flexibility comes more responsibility on the part of the learner. Students must learn to work well independently and without the constant guidance and monitoring of an instructor, making distance learning a challenge for those who are not easily self-motivated.

Distance learning is also a great tool to help reach students who are in geographically remote areas and may not have readily available access to educational facilities or who want to explore opportunities not offered by their local schools. Of course, schools are not the only people who are taking advantage of distance learning, as many businesses have found it a valuable tool in making employee education and training quicker and more cost efficient.
